Why the Massive Farmers’ Protest in Muzaffarnagar?

Sugarcane farmers from Western Uttar Pradesh are protesting at Budhana in Muzaffarnagar district. The protest is being led by Bharat Kisan Union (BKU) and they’re demanding that they be paid their sugarcane dues from January of this year. What is also interesting to note is that after the 2013 sectarian violence in the region, Hindu and Muslim farmers had split on communal lines. However, over the last couple of years, there have been several instances, including this one, where Hindu and Muslim farmers are coming closer with their demands.
