In 2014, there was a massive communal riot between Sikhs and Muslims owing to a controversial piece of land. Three people died in the riot. The controversial land was adjacent to the Gurudwara in the city. The Guru Singh Sabha claimed that they had purchased the land and they wanted to extend their Gurudwara on that land. Muslims claimed that a Mosque had previously stood on that land and that the land belonged to Sunni Waqf Board. The controversy led to a riot in 2014 and case is currently in court. But, in 2020 this land was gifted by Muslims to Sikhs. They said that since the Sikh community has often reached out to Muslims in times of need, like in Bangladesh or the recent riots in Delhi, this was their way of returning the favour.
