The government has recently passed three ordinances around farming which could potentially change the face of farming in India. The first ordinance opens the doors for contractual farming, the second changes the essential commodities act whereby pulses, cereals, pulses, oil seeds, edible oils, onion and potatoes have been deregulated and finally the third ordinance allows farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country outside the APMC, and this ordinance could effectively dismantle MSP (Minimum Support Price). Farmer’s unions across the country are opposing these ordinances and are saying these ordinances will destroy small and medium farmers and these ordinances have been introduced only to help big corporations. ChalChitra Abhiyaan discusses these ordinances along with other issues around sugarcane farming with Sardar VM Singh, a senior farmer union leader.
